Should Organic Vegetable Gardening Be A Part Of Your Life?

Should Organic Vegetable Gardening Be A Part Of Your Life?

Everybody – young and old – should eat vegetables every day. Of course, buying vegetables in the store can get costly, especially if you’re buying organic. If money is an issue, you always have the option of creating your own organic vegetable garden. It can be a fun and exhilarating project that you and the rest of your family can do together.

It appears that more and more people are opting for starting their own organic vegetable gardens, as they realize just how dangerous using chemicals on food really is. Chemicals like pesticides and fertilizers do help to keep the bugs away and make the food get bigger, but it can be harmful to the consumers’ health.

Still, farmers of the past didn’t have these things to help them grow their vegetables. All they had was irrigation and sunlight to ensure their vegetables grew. And, it’s this concept that’s making its way around once more. All you need to do your own organic vegetable gardening is three things:

• Soil
• Sunlight
• Water

What type of vegetables could you plant in your organic vegetable garden? Anything you want! Want tomatoes for your tomato soup or tacos? You can grow them in your garden. Love cucumbers in your salad? What about carrots? You can grow them too. You can even grow a potato to make French fries out of.

The only thing you need to know is when the ideal time (season) to plant these foods are.

Water should properly drain from your garden. And, if this isn’t possible, consider getting a raised bed.

Now, after you know which vegetables you want to grow based on the season, you can choose your seeds. These are typically sold in packets, so make sure to read the instructions before you plant them. Planting them is the easy part; the hard part is making sure nothing happens to your vegetables in the growing stage and before you harvest them.

You have to understand that your vegetables could face various problems such as pests, animals, disease and weeds. If you have weeds, just pull them up individually from the ground. If you have to deal with animals, place a fence around your vegetables. You can also use deodorant soaps, baby powder and animal hair to deter them from attacking your garden.

Another possible solution is mulch, which can comprise of leaf molds, garden compost, manure or chipped bark. You need to apply this three to four inches from the ground to get the full effect.

If you’re not too keen on the idea of an outside organic vegetable garden, you can grow some vegetables inside. Just remember that any vegetable you decide to grow inside will still need daily sunlight and water exposure.
